In war-ravaged post-war Germany, DKW claimed the German championship titles in the 125 and 250cc classes in 1948 and 1949, with the ex-factory driver Siegfried Wünsche crowned 350-cc class champion in 1949. The Wankel engine was based on a Sachs air-cooled rotary used in the German-built DKW/Hercules model W2000. A final agreement with Audi/NSU to market the rotary engine in a production motorcycle was signed in August of 1972, and the project survived the absorption of the Norton Villiers Group into Triumph/BSA in 1973.

This i Hercules was a brand of bicycle and motorcycle manufactured in Germany.. The Hercules Company was founded in 1886 to produce bicycles by Carl Marschütz in Nuremberg, Germany and began producing motorcycles in 1904. It was merged with Zweirad Union after being purchased by ZF Sachs in 1963.. In the 1950s and 1960s Sachs was the largest European fabricator of two-stroke motorcycle engines. Arctic Cat and Outboard Marine Suzuki, Norton, DKW, Van Vern all sold Rotary engine motorcycles. Suzuki tried to mass market the RE5 in 1975–76 but the bike was complex, overweight, and 1974 rotary-engined DKW W2000.

Extract from DKW archive. Although it would eventually prove a technological blind alley, the rotary engine seemed full of promise for automotive applications in the early 1970s. Three major motorcycle manufacturers released models using rotary engines: Suzuki, Norton and DKW. Suzuki, Norton, and DKW all brought rotary-powered bikes to the market, but DKW was the first. Outside of the UK, it was sold as the Hercules Wankel 2000 (W2000), and while the engine was unconventional, everything else was as you’d expect. Bike magazine called it “an outstanding machine in its own right”, even ignoring the novel powerplant. 1928 Dkw P 15 roadster built in East Germany there were 1370 cars built in 1928. The Hercules W2000 was a single disk wankel Naked motorcycle produced by Hercules between 1973 and 1978. It could reach a top speed of 92 mph (148 km/h). Max torque was 24.34 ft/lbs (33.0 Nm) @ 4500 RPM. Claimed horsepower was 26.42 HP (19.7 KW) @ 6500 RPM.
